It was so lovely there though years ago.
Yes, it was. So many things are changing here. Lancaster county is mostly rural, but there is a building boom going on that has been going on for a number of years. Our little burg is but ten thousand or so souls, and they have just finished building two very large housing developments that will house at least 5 thousand more, and no one has asked about whether or not our only school can handle the population increase. We are so small, we don’t even have a police department.
Now, there are people fleeing New York and New Jersey and Philly, and yes, Harrisburg, and there isn’t an infrastructure to handle this many people. Just two years ago, the last Amish farm was becoming an oddity in the increasing urbanization of this part of the county. Now that farm has sold off the rest of its land, and there is an upscale condo ‘village’ with an upscale ‘town center’ - all quaint looking but not a true town. The rest of the farm is now being plowed under.
I will miss the fresh corn and melons I used to buy there and the rest of the produce. Now the Amish aren’t farming their land, they’re the carpenters building the houses on it.
I feel like crying.

So do I. The Amish are leaving. Gods how sad. That is “typical” lack of planning in rural areas. Developers are crass ppl IMHO. I have met many. I hoped to share your area with my daughters, Life never allowed for it. I have fond memories of the area
